The record is a mix of classic Motown elements and contemporary R&B productions. Dolittle 2 released her debut album Songs in A Minor in the summer of 2001. Īfter individual releases on the soundtracks for Men in Black, Shaft - Any questions? and Dr. Due to artistic differences, Keys separated from Columbia in 1998 and followed Clive Davis, the founder of Arista Records, to his new music label J Records. Although she got a place at Columbia University, she decided against studying and instead signed a demo contract with Jermaine Dupris So So Def Records, a Columbia Records sub-label. Īt the age of 16, she graduated from high school early. She mainly played classical music, especially compositions by Mozart, Beethoven and her favorite Chopin. Alicia Keys first took ballet and piano lessons at the age of five. In her youth she came into contact with the music of Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway, Lauryn Hill, Prince and Stevie Wonder, among others. There she grew up with her mother after her parents separated. July 1, 2016–2020: Here, The Voice and ALICIA.1.3 2003–2005: The Diary of Alicia Keys and Unplugged. She wonders who will be interested in this her diary? Obviously, several million to date & with good reason. "Slow Down," is reminiscent of Janet Jackson's "Lets Wait Awhile." "Nobody Not Really," is lighter & has a less cloudy or dark feel as if the day was just starting. "Wake Up & So Simple" are too familiar & the latter has some annoying sounds. "When You Really Love Someone," seems like a cross between "A Woman's Worth & Fallin?" I would call it the former part two.

This one was my favorite of her Sophmore album. It sounds like it came off of her debut album. This may have Alicia's best vocals on this album? The brass be hind Alicia's Piano added elegance. "If I Ain't Got You," sounds like a mix of gospel & Aretha Franklin. It is a refreshing female version of male angst, the spoken interlude in the middle fits perfectly. "You Don't Know My Name," is a 1970's finesse ballad. "If I Was your Woman/Walk On," is a jazzy version of Isaac Hayes-"Walk On by." "Heartburn," has a good drum beat as her raw vocals compare her lust for a man with the title. "Karma," is adriven song that uses Alicia's vocals at their best. The album starts with the classical song "Harlem's Nocturne." Her Piano playing is superb, then a choir joins in aided by a fine beat. "The Diary Of Alicia Keys'" puts Beyonce, Shakira, Underwood, & all of todays female artists from every genre of music in the bargain bin.
